Behrend Track & Field Shines at the Mason Dixon Championships

Penn State Behrend track & field achieved new heights at the Mason Dixon championships over the weekend on May 4-5.  The women had their best championship finish ever at third place with 96 points.  The men came in at fifth with 54 points.  Combined the two teams had 49 All-Mason Dixon performances from 31 athletes, the highest total to date.

Highlights from the men's side included Kevin Gorny (Erie/McDowell) who won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 9:54.19.  Jason Reichart (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) gave the men eight points in the discuss event when he hurled the disc 40.69 meters, taking second in the event.  Penn State Behrend male athlete of the year, Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) earned a trip to the ECACs with a javelin toss of 53.79 meters, good enough for third place and six points.  The 4 x 100 meter rely squad grabbed a third place finish with a new school record time of 42.89 seconds and will also be heading to ECACs.

For the women, all-conference star Kim Chapman (Cranberry Township/Seneca Valley) set a new Behrend record in the 400 meter hurdles with a second-place time of 1:05.22.  Chapman broke her own record of 1:06.32 that she set last season.  Lisa Brozewicz (Wattsburg/Seneca) continued to better her school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase, she gave the women four points with a time of 12:20.96.  The women's 4 x 100 meter relay team are on their way to ECACs after setting the school record with a finish of 50.82.  Danielle Wynder (Jersey City, NJ/W.L. Dickinson) gave her team another eight points with her second place throw in the javelin event of 26.69 meters.

The Mason Dixon championships concluded track & fields regular season.  The men and women who qualified for the ECAC championships compete on May 17-18.
