Track & Field Competes at ECACs, Mitchell Makes a Push for the NCAAs

Behrend track & field was in action at Oneonta State at the ECAC championships on May 17-18.  The men had their best ECAC team finish to date at 21st with 14 points while the women chalked up eight points and finished 29th.  Dan Mitchell (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) was the top Behrend performer, setting a new facility record in the javelin after he chucked it 196' 1".  The distance qualifies Mitchell for the NCAA championships which will be held in Oshkosh, WI on Saturday, May 26 at 2:30 p.m.

Other top performances by the men came from the 4 x 100 meter relay squad who finished in fifth place, with a combined time of 42.95 seconds.  The team consisted of Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville), Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard), Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek), and Vinnie Krawiec (Erie/McDowell).  The fifth place finish earned the group All-ECAC status.  All top-eight performances in any event at the ECAC championships are rewarded with All-ECAC recognition.

On the women's side Virginia Rodgers-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) had two All-ECAC performances.  She took third in the 100 meter dash, sprinting out a time of 12.73 seconds and then took seventh in the 200 meter dash with a finish of 26.35 seconds.

The ECAC championships marked the end of the outdoor season for everyone but Dan Mitchell who will compete at the national tournament in the javelin event.  Mitchell was the first Behrend athlete to qualify for the national tournament and this will be his third overall trip.  He will look to better his ninth place finish at last year's NCAAs when he tossed the spear 194' 6".
