Penn State Behrend Track & Field Has Strong Showing at Mount Union

The Penn State Behrend track & field team competed in its second indoor meet of the 2008 season on Saturday, February 9 at Mount Union.  A number of Behrend Lions qualified for the ECAC Championships with strong performances and five new school records were set.

Behrend freshman Bryson Hartzler (Belleville/Indian Valley) jumped 6' 4" in the men's high jump event, placing second and setting a school record in the process.  In the men's long jump event, Brett McLean (Dorchester, MA/Newton North) had a jump of 21' 8.5" which beat the previous school record, but the new Behrend record now belongs to Ronson Mazany (Ashville, NY/Panama Central).  Mazany jumped 21' 9.75" to set the new school record on Saturday.  In addition freshman John Bowman set a new Behrend record of 33' 0" in the men's weight throw event. 

Also on the men's side a new school record was set in the 4x160 meter relay with a time of 1:14.73.  Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) also came in with an ECAC qualifying time of 6.64 seconds in the 55 meter dash.

For the women, Cassie Manelick (Youngsville/Youngsville) threw a distance of 29' 5" in the women's weight throw event, good for a new Behrend record.  Also picking up points for the team scoring were Danielle Wynder (Jersey City, NJ/W.L. Dickinson), Liz Keller (Olean, NY/Bradford), and two relay teams. 

Other members of the Behrend Lions picking up points on the men's side were Denny Kang (South Park/South Park), David Robinson-Gault (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central), Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville), Mike Stark (Gibsonia/Pine-Richland), Earl Bass (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls), and two relay teams.  

The men's team finished in fifth place of ten competing teams with 42 team points.  The Behrend women finished in eighth place of 11 competing teams with eight team points. 

Behrend track and field is back in action on Saturday, February 23.  The blue and white will travel to compete in the Kent State Invitational which begins at 10:00 a.m.
