Penn State Behrend Track & Field Breaks Numerous Records at Kent

On Saturday February 23, the Behrend Lions track & field teams competed at the Kent State indoor track invitational and broke an amazing 13 school records.

On the men’s side freshman Mike Stark (Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) sprinted to an impressive time of 8.82 seconds in the 60m hurdles, while teammate sophomore Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) also set a record with a time of 7.00 seconds in the 200m sprint. Freshman Tyler Johnson (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie Central) proved he is more than ready to compete at the college level and broke the previous school record with a time of 22.55 seconds. Another freshman competitor Shane Cyphert (North East/Seneca) had an impressive showing in the 300m dash with an impressive time of 43.54 seconds, which was also good enough for a school record.  Sophomore Kevin Gorny (Erie/McDowell) broke the school's previous mile record with a time of 4:31.88.

The men’s team also broke two relay records this past weekend. The 4 x 400m relay team of Jordan Telin (North Huntingdon/Norwin), Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville), Matt Cherpak (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley), and Cyphert ran a time of 3:29.55 which was good enough to become the new school record.  The DMR (1200, 400, 800, 1600) team which consisted of Tyler Lyon (Washington/Trinity), Rob Shrawder (New Wilmington/West Middlesex), Steve Monnie (Butler/Butler), and Gorny ran a time of 11:05.91 to set a new record. In the weight throw Eric Danig (Parkesburg/Octorara) set the school record with a toss of 37’ 4”.

On the women’s side sophomore Virginia Rodgers-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) continued her dominance on the track breaking two school records in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.28 seconds and the 200m sprint with a time of 27.31 seconds. Sophomore Dana Turley (Sarver/Freeport) ran a time of 49.51 seconds in the 300m dash to set the record. The DMR (1200,400,800,1600) team of Tanisha Wheatley (Saltsburg/Kiski), Amanda Wehrle (Rossiter/Punxsutawney), Elizabeth Keller (Olean, NY/Bradford), and Turley set the record with a time of 14:10.30. In the pole vault competition freshman Kylie Swanson (Hermitage/Hickory) set the new school mark at 9’ 0.25”. In the weight throw Cassie Manelick (Youngsville/Youngsville) had a toss of 33’ 11”, good enough for the record.

The Lions will be back in action Saturday, March 1 at the Mount Union Indoor Invitational at 10 a.m.  This will be the blue and white's final indoor meet of the season.
