More Records Fall as Penn State Behrend
Track & Field Competes at Mount Union Indoor Meet
On
Saturday March 1, the Penn State Behrend men's and women's track and
field teams competed in the Mount Union Invitational. The Behrend
Lions had another great weekend setting nine more school records in
the last indoor meet of the season.
On the women’s side, Virginia
Rodgers-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) led the way finishing first in
the 55 meter dash with a winning time of 7.47 seconds which was also good
enough for a school record. Also for the women, the 4 x 1600 meter relay
team made up of Owens, Dana Turley (Sarver/Freeport), Amanda Wehrle (Rossiter/Punxsutawney)
and Kaisy Kafferlin (Spring
Creek/Corry) took home first place and also set a school record with an
impressive time of 1:27.95.
In the pole vault freshmen Kylie Swanson (Hermitage/Hickory) had a mark of
9' 2.25" which set a new
school record. In the women’s weight throw junior Cassie
Manelick (Youngsville/Youngsville) had a toss of 33' 10.25" which broke
her own school record from earlier this season.
For
the men Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) placed first in the 55 meter dash
and set a school record with a time of 6.51 seconds. In the 300 Meter Dash
freshmen Tyler Johnson (Niskayuna,
NY/Colonie Central) placed
fourth and set a school record with a time of 37.30 seconds. In the 400
meter dash freshmen Shane Cyphert (North
East/Seneca) had a strong
second place showing with a time of 52.68 seconds in the finals.
In the 800 meter run Kevin Gorny (Erie/McDowell) placed first with a
time of 2:01.77 and teammate Rob Shrawder (New
Wilmington/West Middlesex) rounded out the top three with a time of 2:06.54.
Also on the men’s side in the 4 x 1600, Ferraro,
Johnson, Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville),
and Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard) teamed up to take home first place and
set a new school record with a time of 1:14.94. In the men’s pole vault
freshmen Denny Kang (South Park/South Park) took home second place with a
mark of 14' 3.5" setting a new school record in the process. In the
men's weight throw Eric Danig (Parkesburg/Octorara) had a toss of 39' 3.75" which was good enough for first place and another
new Behrend
record.
This concludes the indoor track and field season for the blue and white.
Over the spring break week the Behrend Lions will travel to Florida for
training before heading to Costal Carolina on March 14
and 15 for the squad's first invitational of the outdoor season.
