Behrend Track & Field Excels Over the Competition at Slippery Rock

This past weekend the Penn State Behrend men and women’s track & field teams competed in the Slippery Rock Invitational against various schools at the Division one, two and three levels. The Behrend Lions are a Division three program but proved they were more than capable at competing at this level. 

On the women’s side, in the 100m dash event standout Virginia Rodger-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) posted an impressive time of 12.62 seconds to finish fifth place overall out of a field of 47 runners.  Amanda Wehrle (Rossiter/Punxsutawney) added two fifth place finishes in the 200m and 400m dashes. 

A number of men took home top honors and made stand-out performances.  Sophomore Kevin Gorny (Erie/Mcdowell) showed that he is one of the best, taking home the gold in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:53.08. In the 100m dash Mike Ferraro (Erie/Harborcreek) had another outstanding weekend posting a time of 10.87 seconds, setting a new school record and a fourth place finish out of 52 runners. In the same competition Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard) finished with a personal best time of 11.28 seconds and earned a 13th place finish.

It was Ferraro on top again for the blue and white in the 200m dash taking sixth place with a time of 22.78 seconds. Stuczynski also had another strong showing taking ninth place with a time of 22.95 seconds.  He was closely followed by teammate Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville) who finished tenth with a time of 22.98 seconds.

In the 400m dash Jordin Telin (North Hundington/Norwin) finished with a time of 52.64 seconds, which was good enough for seventh place. In the 5000m run Andy Iams (Harrison City/Penn Trafford) finished a solid sixth with a time of 15:54.15. In the 110m hurdles Earl Bass (Niagra Falls, NY/Niagra Falls) had an outstanding race, placing seventh with a time of 15.84 seconds.  Bryson Hartzler (Belleville/Indian Valley) cleared a height of 1.93m to take home second place in the high jump, while teammate Denny Kang (South Park/South Park) cleared 4.11m in the pole vault competition to take home sixth place for the Behrend Lions. Rounding out the day for the blue and white was David Robinson-Gault (Amhers, NY/Amherst Central) finishing sixth in the in the triple jump with a distance of 12.63m.

The Behrend Lions can be see in action again this coming weekend as they head to Westminster for the Invitational that will start at 10:00 a.m.  The blue and white will then gear up for the Mason Dixon Championships to be held @ Christopher Newport on May 2-3.
