Track & Field Has a Number of Stand-Out Performers at Westminster

The Penn State Behrend men's and women's track & field teams traveled to New Wilmington, PA this past weekend to compete in the Westminster Invitational.  Nine total teams took on each other in numerous events.  The Behrend Lions were able to come away with a few wins and more importantly a number of excellent performances. 

For the women, speedster Virginia Rodger-Owens (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) took home two second place finishes in the 100m and 200m dashes.  With a time of 1:00.51, Amanda Wehrle (Rossiter/Punxsutawney) won the 400m dash and was able to take third in the 200m dash.  Dana Turley (Sarver/Freeport) had impressive performances in the hurdle events.  She took away second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.72, while finishing in 17.05 in the 100m hurdles, tying for fourth place. 

In the women's triple jump, Danielle Wynder (Jersey City, NJ/W.L. Dickinson) went 10.54m for a first place finish and teammate Cassie Manelick (Youngsville/Youngsville) finished fifth, jumping 9.95m.  Freshman Kylie Swanson (Hermitage/Hickory) made Behrend history by becoming the first woman to clear 10ft in the pole vault competition.  She tied for third place at the 3.05m mark. 

For the men, Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville) led the blue and white in the 100m dash, finishing with a time of 11.49.  Teammate Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard) crossed the line in 11.61 for a sixth place finish.  Jordin Telin (North Hundington/Norwin) and Shane Cyphert (North East/Seneca) led the way for the Behrend Lions in the 400m dash.  Telin finished second with a time of 50.68, while Cyphert finished the race in 51.99 for fourth place. 

Sophomore Andy Iams (Harrison City/Penn Trafford) had an impressive first place finish in the 5000m run finishing in 15:59.96.  Kevin Gorny (Erie/Mcdowell) was able to capture second in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:02.65.  In the men's high jump event, Bryson Hartzler (Belleville/Indian Valley) jumped 1.90m to a first place finish.  Denny Kang (South Park/South Park) tied for first place in the pole vault, clearing 4.40m.  Ronson Mazany (Ashville, NY/Panama Central) rounded out the day for the men with a first place finish in the long jump and claimed second in the triple jump.  Mazany hit 6.57m distance in the long jump and went 13.67m in the triple. 

The Behrend Lions will compete in the Mason Dixon Championships at Christopher Newport on Friday, May 2 and Saturday May 3.  The track & field teams will then gear up for the ECAC Championships on May 15 and 16.
