Penn State Behrend Track & Field Finds
Success at Mason-Dixon Conference Championships; 32 All-Conference
Selections
The Penn State Behrend
men's and women's track & field teams had a number of outstanding
performances at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships May 2-3, leading to
successful team finishes for both squads. The women scored 105 team
points to finish fourth out of seven, while the men earned 98.5 points to
finish third in the six team men's competition. Earning All-Conference
honors based on outstanding efforts throughout the meet were 20 Behrend men
and 12 women.
For the women, sprinter Virginia Rodgers-Owens
(Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) took home
two second place finishes in the 100m and 200m dashes. Rodgers-Owens
also snagged a first place with the 4 x 100m relay team.
Amanda Wehrle (Rossiter/Punxsutawney) took third place
in two events, the 200m dash as well as the 400m dash, to go along with a
fifth place in the 100m dash. Wehrle also had a first place finish
with 4 x 100m relay team.
In the women's pole vault, Kylie Swanson (Hermitage/Hickory) took first place by clearing a
height of 9 feet 6.25 inches. Danielle Wynder (Jersey City, NJ/W.L.
Dickinson) had a huge day at the conference championships. The
sophomore snagged second place in the javelin to go along with a third place
in both the long jump and triple jump events.
For the men, sophomore Andy Iams
(Harrison City/Penn Trafford) finished second in the 10,000m run and fourth
in the 5000m run. Earl Bass (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) took
second in the 110m hurdles and teammate Michael Stark was third.
Senior Kevin Gorney (Erie/McDowell) grabbed second place in the men's 3000m
steeplechase.
Denny Kang (South Park/South Park) was second in the pole vault with
teammate Stark just behind in third place.
Ronson Mazany (Ashville, NY/Panama Central) also made
big contributions for the blue and white as the freshman finished second in
the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. John Bowman
(Clearfield/Clearfield) also had a strong showing, taking second in the
discus throw and fourth in the javelin throw.
The track & field teams will next compete
at the Allegheny Invitational on May 9 before heading to the ECAC Championships
in Springfield, Massachusetts on May 15 and 16. So far 16 Behrend
track & field athletes have qualified for the ECAC Championships and more
will look to qualify this weekend at Allegheny.
