Volleyball Prepares for AMCC Championships as #1 Seed

The Penn State Behrend women’s volleyball team will host the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships this Friday and Saturday at the Junker Center.  The #1 seed Behrend Lions (24-7, 9-0 AMCC) will face #4 Pitt-Bradford (10-13, 5-4 AMCC) in a 6:00 p.m. semifinal on November 4.  The 8:00 p.m. semifinal will see #2 Penn State Altoona (20-6, 8-1 AMCC) square off against #3 Frostburg State (17-15, 7-2 AMCC).  The two semifinal winners will play Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the AMCC Championship and automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament.

Coach Phil Pisano said, “Earning the right to host the AMCC Championships was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season.  The players have really worked hard this season, they’ve been determined to keep improving, and the results are showing.”

The blue and white have been led by a number of standout performers.  Senior setter Amanda Evans (Upper St. Clair/Upper St. Clair) is leading the AMCC in assists per game (11.22) and has set a new single season school record for assists with 1,167.  Juniors Elaine Voltz (Saxonburg/Knoch) and Lisa Wagner (New Castle/Laurel) are also enjoying fantastic seasons.  Voltz is leading the AMCC in attack percentage (.369) and is ranked second in kills per game (4.20), while Wagner is fifth in both kills per game (3.63) and digs per game (3.67).  Juniors Karla Murray (North East/North East) and Paige Payer (Venango/Cambridge Springs) have started every match and been major contributors for Behrend.

The Behrend Lions have won 17 of their last 18 matches and are currently on an 11-match winning streak.  Behrend will look to capture its second AMCC Championship since the league began in 1997 and earn the team’s first ever trip to the NCAA playoffs.
