Behrend PlacesTwo Players on All-Conference Volleyball Team

The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team concluded their 2001 season on Saturday, November 3, winning their first-ever Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship. The blue and white dropped Pitt-Bradford 3-1 in the semi-finals before defeating four-time defending champion Frostburg 3-1.

Named to the all-conference first-team from Penn State Behrend were senior setter Brianne Engelbert (Meadville/Meadville), and senior outside-hitter Jessica Neidermeyer (Conneautville/Conneaut Valley).   Engelbert totaled the second most assists in a single-season with 1,064, an average of 9.5 per game, worked for 368 kills, and posted a team-high 72 serving aces.  "Brianne deserved her all-conference selection," coach Kellie Diehl said. "She was an exceptional leader this year, especially after switching her position to setter from middle-hitter, she adjusted well and worked hard everyday to improve herself." Neidermeyer led the 22-10 Behrend Lions in kills with 355 and in digs with 455. Her kills total is the second best in volleyball history while the digs total is the third most.  "Jessica, was a consistent outside-hitter for us," said Diehl. Her talent was unmatched by many in the conference.  We'll miss her strength next year on the outside."

Junior Danielle Bemis (Corry/Corry) earned honorable mention accolades after logging 253 kills and 388 digs.  "I was happy to see she was selected," Diehl said. "She had some injuries this year, but battled through.  She did a great job hitting from the right side.  We'll depend on her leadership next year."
