Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season with Monstrous Win over Altoona

The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team closed out the regular season with a very important conference match against AMCC rivals Penn State Altoona (19-6).  Both teams came into the match with identical 7-1 conference records and were fighting for a first round bye in AMCC post season play.  The match would go down to the wire with Behrend eventually capturing the win in four games in the Junker Center on Saturday.

All four games between these two teams were close battles, as the scoring went back and forth for most of the match.  In game one, the Behrend Lions went after Altoona quickly.  The women had almost a ten point lead at one point, but Altoona would not go away easily.  Penn State Altoona fought back but it was not enough as Behrend clinched game one 30-28.

The second game started out relatively the same for the blue and white.  Each team took turns scoring point after point.  The Behrend women fought long and played well under pressure to secure a victory in game two 30-28.

The Altoona Lions came out with the lead throughout much of game three.  The Behrend Lions would make a comeback but fell short as Altoona went on to win game three 30-24.  In game four, the blue and white were back into their groove.  The game was intense, with no team scoring more than one point in a row.  With the game tied 30-29, Behrend's Shelia Ogden (Grove City/Grove City) stepped up and blocked an Altoona spike that won game four and the match for the Behrend Volleyball team.

Top contributors for Behrend included Ogden who had 18 kills while Jenna Kelly (Grove City/Grove City) tallied 16 kills and five blocks on the day.  Carissa Johnston (Cambridge Springs/Cambridge Springs) pounded 13 kills to go along with 11 digs.  Senior captain Deanna Ciccarelli (Pittsburgh/Penn Hills) who was honored before the match for senior day, stepped up with 17 digs in the win.  Brittany Hennessy (Hopewell/Hopewell) also had an outstanding performance, recording five aces with 32 digs, including a number of big saves in game four.

The win puts the Behrend Lions at 18-11 overall, finishing in second place in the AMCC regular season with a conference record of 8-1.  The AMCC tournament will kick off for the ladies on Friday, November 2 at Frostburg State.  They will face the winner of Tuesday's game pitting #3 Penn State Altoona against #6 Pitt-Greensburg.
