Behrend Polo Starts 2005 Season at Navy Open This Weekend

The 2005 Behrend men’s water polo team kicks off its season September 3 and 4 at the Navy Open in Annapolis, Maryland.  Saturday, beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Behrend Lions will face Fordham, George Washington, and an exhibition against Lindenwood.  The competition concludes on Sunday as Behrend faces Navy B in an exhibition game at 1:30 p.m.

Sophomores Anthony Spoto (Birmingham, MI/Birmingham Seaholm) and Andre Pranckevicius (Miami FL/Miami Beach) look to repeat their impressive performances from last season.  In 2004 Spoto and Pranckevicius combined for 118 of Behrend’s 193 goals, and Spoto was named the first ever All-American for Behrend water polo.

Head coach Joe Tristan said, “We’re looking forward to competing against Division I programs Fordham and George Washington.  Also, our exhibition games should provide us with an opportunity to try some different things out while gaining valuable experience.”  With four of six starters returning, the Behrend Lions aim for a Division III national ranking in 2005 as they face a schedule filled with nationally recognized opponents.
