Behrend Women's Water Polo Drops Home Opener to Mercyhurst

The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team dropped its 2008 home opener to cross-town rival Mercyhurst 17-3 on Saturday, March 8 in the Junker pool.

The Mercyhurst Lakers got off to a quick start, leading 4-1 after the first period and extending its lead to 7-2 at halftime.  The Behrend Lions were shut out of the third period, but managed to add another goal in the fourth period.  Getting into the scoring column for the blue and white were senior Amanda Wiest (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove), freshman Bridget Cheng (San Jose, CA/Monta Vista), and sophomore Danielle Wilson (Pittsburgh/Plum).

The Lakers were led by Rachel Griepsma and Christine Somera who each scored four goals in the Mercyhurst victory.

The Behrend Lions (1-5) will try to pick up their first win at home on Sunday, March 9 when they host two opponents.  Behrend will face Washington & Jefferson at 11:00 a.m. and then square off against Division I power Michigan at 3:30 p.m.  Both games will take place in the Junker pool.
