11-05-02 Carl Ward Breaks Water Polo Single-Season
Goal Scoring Record Freshman Carl Ward (Washington, D.C./McDonogh) broke the season scoring record for the Penn State Behrend men's water polo team. Ward ended the season with 53 goals, four more than the previous record set last year by Andrew Hanhauser (Erie/McDowell). Breaking the scoring record was one of his goals for the season, according to head coach Josh Heynes. Heynes also admits that such an accomplishment required tremendous hard work, especially with his team playing such a competitive schedule that includes NCAA Division I and Division II schools with good goalies. "His teammates helped him along with his season, giving him numerous assists, and he would also do the same for them. Hopefully, he and some of his teammates plan on breaking that record again. After all, records are meant to be broken," says Coach Heynes. Ward also led the team in assists with 18 for the season is tied for first in steals with 66. The Behrend Lions concluded their season at the CWPA Southern Division Championship, hosted at Princeton University. The Behrend team lost three of it four matches, but did manage to get a victory against Mercyhurst 8-3, defeating them for the fourth time this season. Behrend improved their final season record to 6-21 in this, their third season of collegiate competition. |
