Behrend Opens 2005-06 Season With 68-57 Win Over Westminster

The Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team opened the 2005-06 season at home this weekend with an eleven point win over the Westminster Titans (0-1) in their annual tip-off tournament at Behrend’s Junker Center. 

The Behrend Lions jumped out to a 10-1 lead to start the contest after a lay-up by sophomore Julia Andrus (Corry/Corry) at the 11:52 mark. Junior sensation Brittany Mays (Knox/Keystone) knocked down a ten-foot jumper with one second in the half to send the blue and white to the break with a 27-16 lead. In the second half the Titans could not get closer than ten.

Rachel Slomski (Erie/McDowell) paced the offense with 16 points on 6 x 7 from the floor. She also worked for six rebounds in twenty-two minutes of action. Sophomore Jessica Serafin (Boalsburg/State College) hit for a career high 16 points on 4-of-9 from long distance. Mays has another steady game with 12 points, six rebounds, six steals and three assists.

The Behrend Lions will play Case Western (1-0) on Saturday, November 19, at 3:00 p.m. in the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament Championship game. CWR advances via a 67-50 win over Mt. Union. CWR was led by Amber Hammell who hit for a game-high 21 points. The consolation game features Mt. Union against Westminster at 1:00 p.m. in the Junker Center. 

Following this weekend's tip-off tournament, coach Roz Fornari’s team will hit the road for a pair of AMCC games at Pitt-Greensburg on December 2, and then travel to Frostburg State on December 3.
