Behrend Lions Women's Soccer Open's Season with
Herb Lauffer Tournament


The Behrend Women's Soccer team opened its season Saturday with a tie against St. Vincent College in it's annual Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament.  The game was decided in penalty kicks, where St. Vincent edged over the Behrend Lions to advance the championship game.

The game went scoreless for the first half until Alex Shasko found the back of the net for St. Vincent in the 46th minute.  Behrend Lions Katie Ritchey (Butler/Butler) answered back in the 49th minute with a hard driven shot beating the keeper.  The back and forth goal scoring continued with Adrianne Groth netting one in the 62nd minute and Nikki Frisbee (Valencia/Mars) evening up the sides, making the score 2-2 in the 69th minute. 

The game went into two overtime periods and still remained scoreless.  The game was then decided on penalty kicks.  St. Vincent came out on top, making three out of five kicks.  Goalkeeper Kayla Frost (Venetia/Peters Township) had a strong game making nine saves.  Behrend out shot St. Vincent 24-13. 

In the tournament's last game of the day, Baldwin-Wallace defeated Geneseo College with a score of 2-1. 

Last year the blue and white posted a 1-1 record at the tournament, winning their first game against Westminster in double overtime.  The ended the weekend with a 3-1 loss against Thomas More.
