Soccer Advances to AMCC Finals With Convincing Win Over La Roche

The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team played like defending champions today in the 2007 AMCC Semi-finals, dropping fifth-seeded La Roche 5-0.

Behrend picks up its ninth win in eleven games and improves to 10-6-3 on the year after posting an 8-0-1 record in regular season conference play. La Roche concludes the season at 11-9-1.

Ten minutes into the game Nikki Frisbee's (Valencia/Mars) shot was deflected and fumbled by the Redhawks goalie and freshman Caitlyn Elser (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) drove the ball into the net for a 1-0 Behrend advantage.

Then Frisbee sent a header to Beth Manganaro (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) who connected on a left-footed volley shot with 9:56 remaining to close out the scoring in the first half with Behrend leading 2-0.

Frisbee, Caitlin Tschappat (Butler/Butler), and Kaitlin Schaefer (Erie/General McLane)added second period goals to complete the victory. Frisbee's goal marked her twelfth of the season and moved her into a third-place tie on the all-time goals scored list.

Behrend outshot La Roche 20-6, and goalie Kayla Frost (Venetia/Peters Township) posted four saves as the Behrend defense logged its seventh shutout in the past nine contests. Earlier this season, Behrend beat La Roche 1-0 on the Behrend Fields.

"It is great to earn the opportunity to host the conference championship on our home field after an unbeaten conference regular-season", " said O'Driscoll.  "We know we have a hard game Saturday, but feel we are prepared."

Behrend awaits the winner of the #3 Penn State Altoona vs. #2 Frostburg State contest that is being played today at 5:00 p.m. in Maryland. The AMCC finals will be played in Erie on the Behrend fields. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, November 3.

Historically, the Behrend Lions and Frostburg State have split the ten AMCC Championship trophies since the inaugural season of league play in 1997. The AMCC champion will receive an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament.
