Women's Soccer
Brings Home AMCC Title for Second Year
The
AMCC Championships took place Saturday, November 3 at the Behrend
fields. The #1 Penn State Behrend Lions took on long time
rivals #2 Frostburg State. The past ten AMCC titles have been
split by only two teams, so it seemed only fit that these same teams
square off for the 11th. Earlier this season the blue and white won a hard
fought battle against the Bobacts, defeating them 1-0. The
Behrend women would go on to claim victory again and their sixth
AMCC title with a 2-1 win. The first half was a back and forth battle that everyone expected. The Bobcats and the Behrend Lions both had some great scoring opportunities, but outstanding goaltending on each end kept the game scoreless at half time. The second half brought more of the same for these two teams. It was not until the 74th minute when Frostburg would strike first. Freshman Shonna Ferree (Frostburg/Beall) took down a free kick and put it right into the back of the net to put the Bobcats up 1-0. But the lead would not last for long.
In the 81st minute, Behrend Freshman Jaclyn
Stottlemyer (Charleroi/Charleroi) handled a broken up pass, dribbled
through a few defenders and shot the ball at the goal. The
ball looked to be saved, but goalkeeper Stephanie Gwinn
(Ijamsville/Urbana) had caught the ball in the net, tying the game
at one goal a piece. Frostburg came right back on a break a
few minutes later. It looked as if they would tally another
goal but Behrend defender Emily Rogan (Bethal Park/Bethal Park) came
to kick the ball out of the goal just in time. With the win, the women's soccer team will now go on to the NCAA tournament. "We are excited for our second national tournament appearance in two years," said O'Driscoll. Schedules and match-ups will be determined early this week. The blue and white could take the field again as early as Wednesday, November 7.
