Women's Soccer Bows Out of NCAA Tournament with Loss to Wittenberg

The Behrend women's soccer team traveled to Springfield, OH, on Friday, November 9 to take on the Wittenberg Tigers (17-2-2) in the first-round of the NCAA Division III tournament.  The women were defeated 4-0.

The beginning play was a tough back and forth battle in the midfield, each team adjusting to the other.  Few scoring opportunities were seen by either side.   The Behrend defense stood tough and kept Wittenberg out of the net.  Goal keeper Kayla Frost (Venetia/Peters Township) had a number of outstanding saves to keep the game scoreless.

The second half started out much the same, with hard tackling midfield play.  Unfortunately it would not be long until the Tigers began to take over momentum of the game.  About halfway through the second half, a Wittenberg forward would make a cross, deep from the end-line.  A number of bodies were fighting for possession but it would be the Tigers forward that would come up with the ball, making the score 1-0.  The blue and white tried to fight back but hard pressure from the Wittenberg team would make it almost impossible for the Behrend Lions to see any offensive action.

Down 3-0, the women had several last minute efforts.  One where midfielder Nikki Frisbee (
Valencia/Mars) would make a cross intended for forward Danielle Demay (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) but would be broken up by the Tigers defense. Sophomore forward Jenna Haschets (Washington/Canon McMillan) also had a great opportunity, where she took a one-touch-shot from outside the 18-yard-box that would be just a little too high and banged off the cross bar.  In the last seconds of the game, the Tigers would get a direct kick that would result in the final goal.

Behrend goalkeeper Kayla Frost also had a busy day, facing 25 shots around the goal and recording 12 saves on the day.

The women finish the season with a 11-7-3 mark on the year and 8-0-1 record in AMCC play.
