OHIO HALL TO BE DEDICATED ON
BEHREND CAMPUS
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will dedicate Ohio Hall, a new
263-bed residence hall located on the southwest end of the campus, on
Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m.
The building features electronic-card access for students, and all rooms
have high-speed Internet capability. Ohio Hall includes seventy-five
single rooms, a first for Penn State Behrend, and features a fitness
center, ten study lounges, five meeting rooms, and gathering areas on
each floor. It also provides space for the Joint Residence Hall Council
Office.
"Student success in college is tied not only to academics but also to
their environment," said Provost and Dean Dr. John M. Lilley. "As with
our other residences, Ohio Hall is designed to provide the high-quality
living environment that enhances students' academic and co-curricular
lives."
Ohio Hall complements Almy Hall, a 132-bed residence hall that opened in
September 1997. Student demand for on-campus housing continues to be
strong at Penn State Behrend, and plans are under way to develop
additional housing.
Construction of the $11 million Ohio Hall began in April 1998 and was
completed just before the beginning of the fall 1999 semester. Built by
Uhl Construction Co., Inc. of Allison Park, Pa., the structure includes
includes 44 four-student suites, two double rooms, and four
special-needs double rooms.
An adjacent 260-space lot has been created to provide additional parking
for Ohio Hall residents.
With the opening of Ohio Hall, the College now houses a total of 1,492
students in five residence halls, three suite residences, and eight
apartment residences. In following the College's tradition of naming
residence halls for sailors and ships that participated in the Battle of
Lake Erie, Ohio Hall is named for the one-gun schooner Ohio, commanded
by Sailing Master Daniel Dobbins.
The dedication will include a dessert reception and tours of Ohio Hall
and the renovated Porcupine, Tigress, and Tiffany halls until 4 p.m.
