SEA GRANT PROGRAM EARNS GOVERNOR'S AWARD
FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE

Environmental Rediscoveries, the flagship educational initiative of Pennsylvania Sea Grant, was recognized today for its outstanding environmental educational programming. Governor Mark Schweiker presented the program's staff with a 2001 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence at a ceremony in Harrisburg.

"We are thrilled to be recognized with the Governor's Award," said Anne Danielski, Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Coastal Educational and Maritime Specialist. "This award is the result of a lot of hard work, but our greatest reward is watching students learn about and appreciate the beauty and fragility of Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie."

Sea Grant staff Danielski and Eric Obert, coastal environmental specialist, were in Harrisburg to receive the award. Both have offices at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, which is the home of Pennsylvania Sea Grant. Also in Harrisburg to receive the award were Jim Stewart, director of the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies, and Richard Eisenberg, associate director.

The Environmental Rediscoveries program is a partnership between Sea Grant, the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. It provides area youth with the opportunity to become sailors and scientists as they sail aboard the Momentum, a 42-foot sloop, and learn about the ecology of Presque Isle Bay through hands-on activities. More than 1,000 young people have participated in the Environmental Rediscoveries experience since the program was launched in the spring of 2000.
