05-03-02 PHOTOGRAPHER AND ALUMNUS National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry, who attended Penn State Behrend in 1971 and 1972, will return on Thursday, May 9, to share stories and pictures of his travels around the world. His presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building, and is free to Penn State alumni and members of the Erie Ad Club. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students. Born in Philadelphia, McCurry went on to graduate with distinction from Penn State's College of Arts and Architecture. His career was launched when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion. When he emerged, he had rolls of film sewn into his clothes, images that would be published around the world as the first to show the conflict there. His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. Please call the Erie Ad Club hotline at 451-8677 to make your reservations for this event.
