12-2-03 PENN STATE BEHREND AMONG UNIVERSITYLEADERS Penn State Behrend isn't just for college students. A recent count by Penn State's Division of Continuing Education discovered that during the past academic year 2,340 children ages 5-18 were served by campus-based youth program activities at Penn State Behrend. According to James Campbell, director of Outreach Operations for the University, that figure makes Penn State Behrend the leader in this category for the twenty-three Penn State locations other than University Park. "This is wonderful news," said Dr. Ken Miller, director of Student Life, who oversees the summer College for Kids program. "As a land-grant university it's part of our mission to reach out to all our constituents, and we seem to be doing an excellent job with our youngsters." A total of 1,671 children were served by Penn State Behrend's extensive summer sports camps, which include age-appropriate coaching and play in soccer, volleyball, boys' and girls' basketball, baseball, water polo, and softball. Behrend Athletics raises funds to offer fifteen free tuitions to those with demonstrated financial need each year. Math Options, a career exploration program for seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade girls, served 292 students from three counties in northwest Pennsylvania during the past year. The program provides hands-on opportunities for young women to explore career fields in math, science, engineering, and computer technology. A third program, College for Kids, offered a total of sixty-seven classes to 377 students during the past summer. Of the total, sixty were academically focused and seven were sports-related.
