PENN STATE BEHREND ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS
OF EARLY CAREER RESEARCH INCENTIVE GRANTS

Seven faculty will have their research funded by the college and their respective schools in the coming year through the Penn State Behrend's Research Incentive Grant Program for Early Career Faculty. Awards in this program are presented to faculty with three or fewer years of service. This year's grants totaled $13,294.

In the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology, awards were presented to:
 . Dr. James R. Sonnenmeier for "Experimental Investigation of     Turbulators for Boundary Layer Control"
 . Dr. John T. Roth for "Effect of Cryogenic Treatment of Carbide Inserts in Tool Wear"
 . Dr. Shouling He for "Stability Analysis and Control of Human Posture via Experiment: The Design of a Base-excited Inverted Pendulum System"

In the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, awards were presented to:
 . Ms. Guadalupe Alvear-Madrid for "Indexes of Critica Hispánica, volumes I-XXV"
 . Dr. Jadwiga Pieper for "Radio Technology and the Transformation of Rural Life in Chile: Gendered Dimensions of Change in Aconcagua, 1956-1973"

In the School of Science, awards were presented to:
 . Dr. Margaret A. Voss for "The Effect of Urban Noise on Extrapair Paternity in a Socially monogamous Bird Species: An Analysis of Microsatellite Markers in Black-capped Chickadees"
 . Dr. David W. Hunnicutt for "Development of Flavobacterium johnsoniae as a Model of Gram-negative Bacterial Infection in Zebrafish"

Applications for the Research Incentive Grants are judged on scholarly merit, potential for proposal and sponsored research, potential for publications and presentations, and progress based on previously awarded Research Incentive Grants. The maximum amount of each award is $2,500. Funds are often used to demonstrate project feasibility, initiate a new area of research, or promote collaborative research.
