10-6-03 CELEBRATE NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK: Children and adults in the Erie area are invited to take part in National Chemistry Week activities scheduled for Saturday, October 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Millcreek Mall and Saturday, November 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at expERIEnce Children's Museum, 420 French Street. Activities will center on this year's theme, "Earth's Atmosphere and Beyond!" and all events are free and open to the public. National Chemistry Week is sponsored annually by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. This year's theme, "Earth's Atmosphere and Beyond!" was sparked by the Earth's recent close encounter with Mars and the public's growing fascination with astronomy and our galaxy. At the Millcreek Mall on Saturday, October 25, children and adults are invited to participate in hands-on chemistry activities that demonstrate and celebrate this year's theme. At the expERIEnce Museum on Saturday, November 8, children ages 4-10 will have an opportunity to learn how chemistry affects the Earth and sky. Students K-12 are invited to participate in the National Chemistry Week Poster Contest by drawing a poster illustrating contributions made by chemistry to the advancement of aviation and atmospheric chemistry. Some topics to be considered might be air, weather, rainbows, the ozone layer, and clouds. Posters may not exceed 8 1/2 by 14 inches and must be drawn using crayons, paint, colored pencils, or markers. One entry is permitted per student. The person submitting the winning poster will receive a chemistry t-shirt and a hands-on chemistry program for their school. For more information about the National Chemistry Week, please contact chemistry professor Tracy A. Halmi at Penn State Behrend by calling 814-898-6045 or by e-mail a tao104@psu.edu. Contact:
