PENN STATE BEHREND HOSTS
"SEX, DRUGS, & ROCK 'N ROLL" OCT. 27

The Center for Organizational Research and Evaluation (CORE) at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host this year's kick-off of "Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n Roll," on Monday, October 27, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Developed by Family Services of Erie and sponsored by 35WSEE, this national award-winning program is free and open to the public.

" 'Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n Roll' is a fast-paced, informative, and engaging program," said Melissa Webster of Family Services of Erie, director of the program. "In addition to our speakers, a number of local agencies will have resource tables set up that evening to distribute fact sheets and tangible warning signs." Since its inception in April 2001, the program has been presented in fifteen area high schools and reached 7,500 adults.

"With Erie County's rate of births to single teens 27 percent higher than the state average, and with 77 percent of Erie County's eleventh-grade students having tried alcohol and drugs, this problem is real," said Dr. Carl Kallgren, associate professor of psychology and director of CORE at Penn State Behrend, a host of the program. "The issue is vitally important to the community, and hosting this event is one way we can help increase the awareness of what exists for parents, educators, and professionals." The program will also be hosted by Penn State Behrend's Health and Wellness Center

At this year's opening event four keynote speakers will speak and encourage dialogue on pertinent topics. Parents, professionals, teachers, and community members will receive timely and accurate information on adolescent sexuality, sex behaviors and risks, drug use and detection, legal aspects of drug and alcohol use, Internet safety, and healthy relationship building.
