STEFON HARRIS QUARTET OPENS LOGAN MUSIC SERIES

Music at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series begins its dynamic thirteenth year on Tuesday, September 23, with renowned vibraphonist, Stefon Harris. Harris and his quartet, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Tarus Mateen, and drummer Terreon Gully, will give a lunchtime presentation in the sunny Wintergarden of the Reed Union Building at Penn State Behrend. Their performance is free and open to the public.

Improvising with artists such as Jacky Terrasson and Cassandra Wilson, this young musician quickly gained the attention of the music world. This colorful performer jumps from the marimba to the vibraphone, sometimes playing the two simultaneously. This near athleticism unites his enthusiasm for the music and technical prowess on the instruments. His strong musical background stems from his academic endeavors at the Manhattan School of Music, where he obtained a B.A. in classical music and an M.A. in jazz performance.

The Stefon Harris Quartet recently collaborated with several other musicians for The Grand Unification Theory. This album is an eleven-movement, seventy-minute suite that highlights Harris' talents as a composer as well as instrumentalist. Predecessors of  this more recent album are A Cloud of Red Dust in 1998 and Black Action Figure in 1999. His performance at Penn State Behrend guarantees a montage of musical sounds from familiar Gershwin pieces to innovative Harris originals.

The Logan Music Series was founded by Kay Logan in 1989 and is supported by the Harry A. Logan Jr. Foundation. Logan created this unique series as a way of bringing classical music to all audiences, including children. All of the musical groups incorporate an educational program with audience interaction into their performances, and each ensemble also performs at Diehl School, Penn State Behrend's Adopt-a-School partner.

Guests are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch to enjoy the informality of this noontime event. For more information about upcoming Logan performances, please contact the Penn State Erie Office of Student Activities at (814) 898-6171.
