Computer Series Presents Lecture on Biometric Security

Dr. Sreela Sasi of Gannon University will present "Potential of Biometric Techniques for Security" at Penn State Behrend at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, in the Otto Behrend Science Building, room 101. His lecture is free and open to the public.

"Biometrics," Dr. Sasi said, "is defined broadly as the scientific discipline of observing and measuring relevant attributes of living individuals or populations to identify active properties or unique and permanent characteristics." It can be used to confirm a person's identity by studying such characteristics as voice, iris and retinal scan, signature, DNA fingerprinting, and dental structure. Issues with invasion of privacy have been raised. Application of biometrics relating to e-commerce, immigration, and gait in secure areas will be discussed.

The "Computing in an Unsafe World" Computer Science Speaker Series is sponsored by the Behrend Computer Science Department and the Behrend Computer Science Organization. For more information call the School of Science at 814-898-6105 or visit the web at pennstatebehrend.psu.edu.
