Behrend Choir to Present "An Evening of Sacred Choral Music"

On Thursday, December 2, the Penn State Behrend College Choir will present "An Evening of Sacred Choral Music" directed by Dr. Daniel Barnard and accompanied by Vicki Baldwin. The concert will be held in the Reed Union Building McGarvey Commons at 8:00 p.m. The centerpiece of the concert is a performance of Antonio Caldara's Stabat Mater.

"Caldara was an Italian contemporary of Bach," said Dr. Barnard. "This setting of the traditional text has elements of the beautiful singing present in the renaissance but also shows the Baroque influence of counterpoint from Bach and Handel."

There are two other works on the program: Chris Massa's Missa Brevis and John Rutter's God be in my Head.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and children under 12. Behrend students may pick up free tickets with their Penn State ID until 5:00 p.m. on the date of the concert.

The choir is one of the college's oldest organizations. Despite the absence of a Behrend music major, they have established a high performance standard and have represented the college well in concerts both on campus and in their periodic travels. Two years ago the choir traveled to Italy for performances in Rome and Florence.
