10-11-04 BEHREND PRESENTS COMPUTER SCIENCE SPEAKER SERIES On Wednesday, October 27, Karen Panighetti, a certified computer examiner specializing in forensics, will give a lecture entitled "Introduction to Cybercrime and Computer Forensics." The lecture is the first in the "Computing in an Unsafe World" Computer Science Speaker Series. It will be held in the Otto Behrend Science Building, room 101, at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Cybercrime is growing at an alarming rate. Online fraud and identity theft are two of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S., according to the Secret Service and the Federal Trade Comission. Hacking, virus, corporate espionage, and child pornography are other ways criminals use computer technology to take advantage of innocent people. To combat this onslaught of criminal activity, the field of computer forensics has developed. Computer forensics deal with the recovery of evidence left in a computer system. With applications in both the criminal and civil arenas, today's computer investigators face numerous challenges in their quest to solve technological crimes. Karen Panighetti earned her Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) certification from the Southeast Cybercrime Institute. She serves as chief computer forensic examiner for TechnoSecure, Inc., an Erie-based firm specializing in information security. Panighetti also serves as vice president for the Society of Computer Forensic Investigators. She has seventeen years of experience in information technology. The "Computing in an Unsafe World" Computer Science Speaker Series is sponsored by the Behrend Computer Science Department and the Behrend Computer Science Organization.
