HUUN HUUR TU TO PERFORM AT BEHREND
|

Huun huur tu |
Huun Huur Tu will perform in Music
at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series. The performance will be on
Thursday, November 11, at noon in the Reed Union Building
Wintergarden.
The Tuvan singers come from the former Soviet autonomous Republic
of Tuva, north of Mongolia. "Huun Huur Tu" means "rays of light,"
which refers both to the light off the steppes of their homeland
as well as the "sonic rays" the musicians produce. |
Their focus is on the musical technique
of "xöömei" or throat-singing, in which a single vocalist
simultaneously produces two distinct pitches: a fundamental note and,
high above it, a series of articulated harmonics that are sequenced
into melodies and manipulated with extreme virtuosity in several
canonical styles. These sounds are intended to mimic natural sounds,
which, when performed together, paint an audio landscape.
Music at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series was founded by Kay Logan
in 1989 and is supported by the Harry A. Logan Jr. Foundation, the
Arts Council of Erie; Student Activity Fees at Penn State Behrend;
Pennsylvania Partners on the Arts; and Scott Enterprises. Logan
created this unique series as a way of bringing classical music to all
audiences, including children. All of the musical groups incorporate
an educational program with audience interaction into their
performances, and each ensemble also performs at Diehl School, Penn
State Behrend's Adopt-a-School partner.
Guests are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch to enjoy the
informality of this noontime event. For more information about
upcoming Logan performances, please contact the Penn State Erie Office
of Student Activities at (814) 898-6171.
