9-7-04 PENN STATE BEHREND INTERNATIONAL The Penn State Behrend International Film Series will show the 1999 Spanish film Alone on Monday, September 27, at 7:00 p.m. in the Reed Union Building, room 117. The showing is free and open to the public. The plot centers around Maria, an angry young woman living in a poor neighborhood in Sevilla, Spain. When her father falls ill and is admitted to the hospital, her mother moves in with her. Soon afterwards Maria becomes pregnant by her married boyfriend. Despite some bleak subject matter, the film ultimately affirms the relationship between these two women and their ability to keep going in the face of overwhelming hardship. Alone is a well-written and well-acted movie that, despite its dramatic nature, never becomes sentimentalized. It ends on a satisfying and surprising "note of optimism." The film, written and directed by Benito Zambrano, won fourteen awards in 1999, including five Goyas (the Spanish Oscars). Contact: Jen Town 814-898-6522 e-mail: jlt234@psu.edu
