PENN STATE BEHREND INTERNATIONAL
FILM SERIES PRESENTS BLOSSOMS OF FIRE

The Penn State Behrend International Film Series will show the 2000 Mexican documentary Blossoms of Fire on Monday, October 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the Reed Union Building, room 117. The showing is free and open to the public.

Blossoms of Fire is a firsthand account of the Zapotec tribe in Juchitan, Oaxaca, Mexico. Called a "matriarchal utopia," the sexes live in rare harmony, with men in charge of the manual labor, women managing the finances, and both sharing in childrearing and household duties. Because the roles of both genders are equally appreciated, there is no struggle for power. The Zapotec women and men celebrate good food, colors, clothing, and fiestas in a society that values optimism and self-empowerment.

Blossoms of Fire was directed by Maureen Gosling and won the Coral Award for Best Documentary by a Non-Latino Director. For more information on the International Film Series, call the Office of Student Activities at 814-898-6171.
