9-2-04 FICTION WRITER OPENS CREATIVE Fiction writer Brian Evenson will open Penn State Behrend's Creative Writers Speaker Series on Thursday, September 23, at 6:00 p.m. with a reading in the Smith Chapel. A reception for Evenson will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Smith Chapel living room. Both reading and reception are free and open to the public. Evenson is the author of seven books, including Altmann's Tongue (1994), Contagion (2000), and, most recently, The Wavering Knife (2004). He has also written a book on Robert Coover's fiction, and his translations include Jacques Jouet's Mountain R and Jean Fremon's Painting. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Glenna Luschei Prize, a Howard Foundation Grant and a Camargo Foundation Grant. Evenson's stories have been described as "darkly comic absurdist fables for our time." Evenson holds a double Ph.D. in English Literature and Critical Theory from the University of Washington. He has taught at Brigham Young University, Oklahoma University, Syracuse University, and the University of Denver. He currently teaches at Brown University. The Creative Writers Speaker Series is co-sponsored by the Clarence and Eugenie Baumann Smith Fund and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
