9-29-04 ROBERT REICH TO SPEAK AT PENN STATE BEHREND
He served as Secretary of Labor during President Clinton's first term. During his years as secretary, Reich oversaw the first increase in the minimum wage since 1989, the enactment of the Retirement Protection Act, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Before his term, Reich was on the faculty of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Reich is the author of ten books, including the best-seller Locked in the Cabinet, The Work of Nations, which has been translated into twenty-two languages, and The Future of Success, voted second best-selling business book by BusinessWeek magazine. He has published over 200 articles, and has a regular column in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and other major national newspapers. His commentaries are heard weekly on public radio. In 2003, Reich won the prestigious Vaclev Havel prize for his original contributions to world thinking and culture. All Speaker Series presentations take place in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building at 7:30 p.m. They are free and open to the public. The series is sponsored by the Student Activity Fee, the Sam and Irene Black School of Business, the Janet Neff Sample Center for Manners and Civility, and the Harriet Behrend Ninow Memorial Lecture Series Fund. It has twice won the National Association for Campus Activities' Best Lecture Series Award. An interpreter for deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members will be visible at each lecture, and assistive listening devices are available upon request from the Office of Student Activities at (814) 898-6171.
