9-29-04 RHYTHMS OF LIFE SERIES AT PENN STATE BEHREND PRESENTS STEEL IMPRESSIONS On Wednesday, October 20, the Rhythms of Life Series presents Steel Impressions: Music from the Island. This six-piece steel drum band will perform at Penn State Behrend's new Senat Hall Courtyard at noon. The show is free and open to the public. Steel Impressions has a repertoire of jazz, funk, rock and roll, and calypso. They play with energy, style, and a deep love for their unique instrument. Steel drums, or pans, are made from fifty-five gallon drums pounded into form and struck with rubber-padded mallets. They originated on the island of Trinidad during the 1940s. Pans have since developed into lead melody instruments, highly prized by the music world, and sought after for their rich, mellow tone, and versatile harmonies. The Rhythms of Life Series performances are sponsored by the Office of Educational Equity Programs and the Student Activity Fee.
