9-14-04 PENN STATE BEHREND INTERNATIONAL FILM
SERIES The Penn State Behrend International Film Series will show the 2001 French film The Taste of Others on Monday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the Reed Union Building, room 117. The showing is free and open to the public. The Taste of Others, directed by Agnes Jaoui, is a comedy about businessman Castella who lives an affluent but empty life. His wife is a selfish interior decorator with no taste who loves her dog more than her husband. Castella begins to take English lessons from a woman named Clara, but is quickly frustrated by his inability to master the language. When Clara can't find a fun way to teach him, he fires her. Later his wife drags him to a theater production where he quickly falls in love with the lead actress, who is none other his former English instructor. She doesn't return his affection, but his love for her raises his interest in what she represents: the bohemian life of arts and ideas, of developing one's own taste. The Taste of Others is "smart and wears its intelligence lightly." It is a funny, delightful film that, underneath its humor, asks its audience to consider how they form their own tastes and judgments.
