State-wide Organization Honors Kallgren for Public Service

Carl Kallgren

The Pennsylvania Psychological Association presented its 2005 Public Service Award to Carl Kallgren, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and director of administration and outreach for the college’s Center for Organizational Research and Evaluation (CORE), during an awards ceremony at the recent annual PPA convention in Harrisburg.

“Carl has helped local professionals and undergraduate students experience the relevance of psychological theory and research in a ‘real world’ kind of way,” wrote Patrick Hanna, Ph. D., on behalf of the PPA.

Kallgren

In an effort to bring the university to the community, he created CORE and the CORE Model of Intervention, which has resulted in increased grant funding for social service agencies in Erie County. Kallgren, through his work with CORE, has been instrumental in coordinating the efforts of several community agencies that work in the area of teen pregnancy prevention. These agencies have demonstrated a significant impact to their communities with better coordination, improved process and outcome measures, and impact development.

Kallgren earned his doctorate in social psychology from Arizona State University in 1987. He joined the psychology faculty at Penn State Behrend following graduation, and in 1994 was promoted to associate professor. He is a past president of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Psychological Association.
