Gary Viebranz

The region is in for a treat on Sunday, August 21, when Winds on the Lake presents “And All That Jazz,” a concert of classical chamber works influenced by America’s jazz tradition. The performance takes place at Penn State Behrend in the Reed Union Building, McGarvey Commons, at 4:00 p.m.

Winds on the Lake is a group of regional musicians committed to the performance of music written primarily for orchestral wind instruments, with limited use of strings.

Artistic co-directors of the ensemble are Gary Viebranz, director of instrumental ensembles at Penn State Behrend, and Matthew Inkster of West Liberty State College. The instrumentation for each concert varies, but for this concert, twenty-six of the area’s most talented musicians will gather to perform.

The featured selection of the concert is George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (1924), played in the big band arrangement used by famed bandleader Paul Whiteman. The ensemble will also play Igor Stravinsky’s Ragtime (1918) and Kurt Weill’s suite from the Threepenny Opera (1929).

Soloist for the event will be pianist Randall Fusco, associate professor of music at Hiram College. Fusco has become increasingly active as a conductor over the past five years, following a summer as a Conducting Fellow at the Conductors Institute of South Carolina. Fusco was educated at the Eastman School of Music and at the University of Illinois.

Tickets for the August 21 concert will be available at the door at a cost of $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. For more information call 814-898-6289.
