Nobel Prize Winner Next in Speaker Series
Stiglitz was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) during the Clinton administration, and served as CEA chairman from 1995 to 97. Stiglitz joined the World Bank in 1997 to serve as chief economist and senior vice president; he became increasingly disillusioned with the failures of neo-liberal policy and was eventually ousted from the position. In 2001 Stiglitz joined the faculty of Columbia University and in October of that year was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Science. Recognized around the world as a leading economic educator, Stiglitz is founder of The Journal of Economic Perspectives and author of several highly acclaimed books, including The Roaring Nineties and Globalization and Its Discontents, which has been translated into twenty-eight languages and is an international bestseller. The Penn State Behrend Speaker Series is sponsored by the Student Activity Fee, the Sam and Irene Black School of Business, the Janet Neff Sample Center for Manners and Civility, and the Harriet Behrend Ninow Memorial Lecture Series Fund. It has twice won the National Association for Campus Activities’ Best Lecture Series Award. An interpreter for deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members will be visible at the lecture, and assistive listening devices are available upon request from the Office of Student Activities at (814) 898-6171. These services are made possible through funding from Penn State’s Equal Opportunity Planning Committee. Stiglitz’s lecture also will be taped for broadcast on AM1450/WPSE Penn State Erie radio. For more information about the Speaker Series, please call Penn State Behrend at (814) 898-6171.
