Fourth annual TubaChristmas set for Dec. 10

A group of tuba players pose around Santa ClausPenn State Behrend will again host the perfect antidote to treacely, tinkling holiday hot air: Christmas carols performed with the collective power of over 100 student, amateur, and professional tuba and euphonium players.

It’s called TubaChristmas, and it will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Even better, it is free and open to the public.

TubaChristmas debuted at Rockefeller Center’s ice rink in 1974 as a tribute to the late tuba legend William J. Bell, who was born Christmas Day 1902. The event has since grown to the point that it was held in 204 cities last year.

“Tuba players are a special breed. They have a sense of camaraderie, and a sense of humor,” says Gary Viebranz, director of instrumental ensembles at Penn State Behrend and the region’s TubaChristmas organizer. “After years of sitting in the back row, we enjoy this annual opportunity to take center stage.”

UnderCurrents, a professional tuba/euphonium quartet, also will perform.
TubaChristmas is produced by the Harvey Phillips Foundation and supported by the Mary Behrend Cultural Fund and UnderCurrents. Musicians interested in performing can contact Viebranz at 814-898-6289 or e-mail him at gav3@psu.edu.
