Scientist Discusses His Search for Alien Life

Jospeh Stiglitz stands before book casesSeth Shostak, senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, will discuss his work and its possible social ramifications at an Open House Night in Astronomy lecture on Thursday, October 27.

The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in McGarvey Commons. It is free and open to the public.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based SETI Institute searches for cosmic company using massive radio telescopes and sophisticated optical detectors. Its hope is to eavesdrop on alien radio transmissions to prove that we are not alone in the universe. What are the chances that SETI will succeed? What would be the impact on earthly society if it does?

Shostak’s presentation is designed for a non-technical audience. Weather permitting, astronomical viewing at Penn State Behrend’s Mehalso Observatory will follow. For more information contact the School of Science at (814) 898-6105.
