The Logan Music Series at Penn State Behrend opens its sixteenth season at noon on Tuesday, September 20, with a performance by Imani Winds, a wind quintet whose mission is to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quintet and connect European, African, and American music traditions. In addition to the six traditional Music at Noon concerts, the series will add three Music at Night evening performances.

Logan performer Kiran Ahluwalia will join another Indian artist, Shafatullah Khan, for “A Passage to India” on Friday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m. Trio Johannes will present an evening concert on Wednesday, February 1, at 7:00 p.m., and Lenora Zenzali Helm will present an evening of vocal jazz on Thursday, April 6, at 7:00 p.m. While the noon concerts are free, there will be an admission charge for the evening performances. All evening Logan Series performances are in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building at Penn State Behrend.

The six noontime chamber concerts scheduled in this sixteenth year of the Logan Series include a diverse selection of internationally renowned artists and ensembles. Noon performances in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building are free and open to the public. In addition to Imani Winds, the 2005-2006 season includes:

Proteus Ensemble on Wednesday, October 19. This group draws on its cultural diversity and incorporates traditional classics, currents of recent music, and diversified pieces.

Kiran Ahluwalia, an Indo-Canadian vocalist, on Thursday, November 3. Ahluwahlia sings ghazal poetic songs and Punjabi folk songs, each with their own distant style and complexity.

The instrumental Trio Johannes on Tuesday, January 31. These award-winning Italian musicians balance the piano, violin, and cello into a harmony exhibited in their repertory of classical selections.

The St. Petersburg String Quartet on Tuesday, February 28. This traditional Russian string quartet has talent and versatility that allows the group to incorporate many styles in its repertoire, which ranges from classical to contemporary pieces.

Jazz singer and composer Lenora Zenzalai Helm on Wednesday, April 5. Helm is an acclaimed singer, arranger, lyricist, composer, and educator, who has toured nationally and internationally with her jazz trio for more than a decade. In 1998, Helm was chosen as a U.S. Jazz Ambassador to represent the United States abroad and foster recognition and awareness of American Jazz.

The Logan Music Series was founded by Kay Logan in 1989 and is supported by the Kay Logan Trust, the Arts Council of Erie; Student Activity Fees; Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation; and Pennsylvania Partners on the Arts.

All of the musical groups incorporate an educational program with audience interaction into their performances, and each ensemble also performs at Diehl School, Penn State Behrend’s Adopt-a-School partner. Dan Barnard, choral director at Behrend, serves as series director.

Guests are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch to enjoy the informality of this noontime event. For more information about upcoming Logan performances, please call the Office of Student Activities at 814-898-6171.
