Penn State Creamery Ice Cream Prepares to Lick Erie

The name Paterno is synonymous with football nationwide, but what about ice cream? Peachy Paterno is one of 12 flavors of Penn State’s University Creamery ice cream that will soon be available to local football and ice cream fans alike—without having to trek to State College to get it.

The Penn State Behrend Alumni Society has scheduled three opportunities for Erie-ites to savor the legendary treat, which is so fresh that only four days elapse from the cow to the scoop. All proceeds from each of the three sales will benefit the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society Scholarship, which received $2,500 last year as a result of the society’s two ice cream sales.

August 7 order deadline: For those who prefer to stockpile for a rainy day, the society is taking orders for half-gallons of nine flavors, including vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, bittersweet mint, butter pecan, peachy Paterno, peanut butter swirl, death by chocolate, and WPSX coffee. Half-gallons are $8 each or, on orders of three or more gallons, $7 each. Orders are due by Monday, August 7, and can be picked up on Saturday, August 26, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Intermodal Transportation Complex, located at the Bayfront Highway and Holland Street. If using a credit card, phone orders can be placed by calling 814-898-6159.

August 18-20 at Celebrate Erie: Visit the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society booth, where members will serve up pints and Dixie cups once again. The same flavors and sizes as those listed for Key West Phest will be available.

Since its inception in 1987, the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society has developed a variety of programs and activities for alumni to continue their relationship with the college. The society organizes the annual reunion and networking events, facilitated the creation of an endowed scholarship to provide students with another source of financial aid, and serves as a resource for alumni, faculty and staff alike.
