Roth Named Outstanding Young Engineer Penn State Ties Michigan on Winners’ List
SME, which is based in Dearborn, Mich., annually recognizes manufacturing engineers age 35 or younger who have made exceptional contributions and accomplishments in the field of manufacturing during the early stages of their careers. Recipients are nominated by their peers in the manufacturing community and nominations are reviewed by the Society’s International Awards and Recognition Committee. Roth is the seventh Penn State engineering faculty member to win the award since its inception in 1980; the last faculty member was Xiang Zhang, former assistant professor in the College of Engineering at University Park, who won in 1998. According to SME records, Penn State is tied with University of Michigan for the second-highest number of Young Manufacturing Engineer award recipients; Georgia Institute of Technology has had 12. Presentation of Roth’s award will take place in May at a luncheon held by the North American Manufacturing Research Institute of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in Milwaukee, Wis. Roth earned B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Mich., and has taught at Penn State Behrend since 2001. His research interests lie in three general areas of manufacturing engineering—cryogenic treatments, electrically assisted manufacturing, and multivariate modeling of manufacturing systems.
