Economist David Hale to Lecture on October 26 for Speaker Series David Hale, an expert in the economies of China and other developing Eastern countries, will be the next lecturer in the Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Hale, a Chicago-based economist whose clients include investment management firms, major hedge funds, and multinational companies, will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, in the Reed Union Building’s McGarvey Commons. Admission to his lecture is free and open to the public. “China’s economy greatly affects our own, so it’s vital that our students have access to the latest economic trends and forecasts,” Kris Motta Torok, series director, said. “The Office of Student Activities is pleased to work with the Sam and Irene Black School of Business to offer David Hale’s insights to the Erie community.” Hale is former chief economist for Kemper Financial Services and its parent company, Zurich Financial Services, where he advised the group’s fund management and insurance operations on economic outlook and public policy issues. He left Zurich in 2002 to found his own investment company, Hale Advisors, LLC. A member of the National Association of Business Economists and the New York Society of Security Analysts, Hale has written on a broad range of economic subjects for the Wall Street Journal, Far Eastern Economic Review, Financial Times of London, New York Times, Nihon Kezai Shimbun, Harvard Business Review, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, National Interest and other publications. He has lectured at the World Economic Forum, the FORTUNE Global CEO Conference and the National Association of Governors. Hale has testified before Congressional committees on domestic and international economic policy issues, and gives briefings for senior officials in the executive branch, including President George W. Bush. He has also consulted with the Department of Defense on changes in the global economy that affect United States security. A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Hale holds a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics. In 1990, the New York chapter of the National Association of Business Economists honored him with the William F. Butler Award, which it gives annually to a business economist who has made an outstanding contribution in the field. Other recipients include former Federal Reserve chairs Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan.
