Penn State Behrend Community Urged to Enroll in Emergency Text Messaging Service
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, offers an emergency alert text messaging service to help get information to students, faculty and staff during crisis situations. The text messaging service has been available at Penn State Behrend since late April, after the horrible incident at Virginia Tech.
All members of the college community are strongly urged to register their current cell phone information. Students, faculty and staff have received instructions via e-mail on how to sign up for the service, which will be used only to deliver urgent notices about Penn State Behrend, such as college closures, class delays, and other emergency situations.
Enrollment in the program is free and easy to complete, but Penn State Behrend community members must opt-in to receive emergency text messages.This is an expansion of the existing PSUTXT text messaging system, which began at Penn State University Park in 2006-07. In light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, all Penn State campuses have been added to the system.
“The horrible events at Virginia Tech have highlighted the importance of rapid and accurate communications during emergencies,” said Jack Burke, chancellor of Penn State Behrend. “This addition of cell phone text messaging to relay important information is a valuable communication tool for the college.”
Along with the new text messaging ability, the college’s emergency communication channels include www.behrend.psu.edu, telephone, e-mail, and automated emergency messages at the college’s main phone number, 814-898-6000.
