Allan Slovenkay to Give Harpsichord Recital
This year’s Smith Music Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will close with a harpsichord recital by Allan Slovenkay, organist-choirmaster emeritus of Trinity Memorial Church in Warren. Slovenkay’s performance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in the college’s Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. Compositions by Handel, Bach, Balbastre, Rameau and Couperin will be played on a William Dowd Franco-Flemish harpsichord, a keyboard instrument that looks similar to a piano, but generates sound by plucking strings rather than striking them. In addition to serving Trinity Memorial for 33 years, Slovenkay was a longtime faculty member and college organist at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, where he founded the College Community Choir that performs several times a year with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Slovenkay is a frequent guest organist, harpsichordist, and choral conductor in the tri-state region. Most recently, he has appeared as a recitalist at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul, St. Peter Cathedral, and Mercyhurst College. Smith Music Series performances are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel at 814-898-6609.
