Luminescent Orchestrii Performs Tuesday, October 16
Romanian Gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, and hip-hop beats will be eaten and spit out by an eclectic ensemble of violin, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass when Luminescent Orchestrii appears at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Luminescent Orchestrii’s performance, part of the college’s Rhythms of Life cultural series, is free and open to the public. It begins at noon in Bruno’s Café, located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building; a full menu of hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase. New York City-based Luminescent Orchestrii’s members are a circus composer, old-time fiddle player, experimental theatre composer, and free-jazz bassist who were drawn together by a love of Balkan and Gypsy music. They’ve extensively toured the east coast, England, Scotland, and Germany, and regularly travel to Romania, Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia for inspiration. The group recently returned from Serbia’s Trumpet Festival, a 47-year-old event held in Guca that encourages competing Gypsy bands to take to the small town’s streets and restaurants. Luminescent Orchestrii’s performance is sponsored by the Penn State Behrend Office of Educational Equity and Diversity Programs and by the Student Activity Fee. For more information, contact the college’s Office of Student Affairs at 814-898-6111. |
