Fish Consumption Advice

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania currently issues fish consumption advisories for Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay, and for many portions of the Delaware River Watershed. These advisories, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, and Pennsylvania Department of Health, recommend guidelines for safe consumption of fish that are contaminated with elevated levels of mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Pennsylvania Sea Grant staff works to translate the sometimes confusing advisories into easy-to-read formats for English-speaking and non-English speaking anglers. To learn more about fish consumption advisories for Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay, contact Sean Rafferty. For the greater Philadelphia area, view the Fish Smart, East Smart brochures or the companion brochure What Women Need to Know about Mercury in Fish and Shellfish or contact Ann Faulds.
